Genesys Logic, a Taiwan-based IC design house, has passed Windows 8 Hardware Certification Kit for its USB 3.0 controller IC GL3520, and expects shipments of the IC in 2012 to be double those in 2011, according to the company.

While Taiwan-based Etron Technology has offered USB 3.0 controller ICs used in flash drives, fellow designers Phison Electronics, Silicon Motion Technology, Alcor Micro, ASMedia Technology and VIA Labs will offer USB 3.0 ICs, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Genesys finished development of its GL3520 in the third quarter of 2011 and started production at the end of that year, the company indicated. GL3520 enables transfer of data among four SuperSpeed devices at a power consumption of 0.9W and fast recharge of power, Genesys pointed out. The USB 3.0 hub controller IC is in two packaging modes, QFN88 and QFN64, the company indicated.
