Intel CEO Paul Otellini recently had a meeting with Acer's
executives in Taiwan, discussing the smartphone business and has also introduced
some telecom carriers to Acer as a foundation for future cooperation, according
to sources from the upstream supply chain.
However, Acer has declined to comment about its meeting with
Otellini.
The sources pointed out that Otellini and some telecom carrier
executives reportedly had a meeting on September 25 with Acer executives in
hopes of persuading the vendor to release Intel-based entry-level or mid-range
smartphones and expand the business through the a three-way partnership.
However, Acer is expected to continue placing its focus on the PC
business, the area the company is most familiar with, and will gradually adjust
its strategies for smartphone and tablet businesses. For the smartphone
business, Acer is showing a great interest in the China market and expects to
become a top-10 brand vendor in China in 2014, the sources noted.
