Taipei, Sept. 21, 2012 (CENS)--Taiwan`s personal computer
(PC) market declined 8.7% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and 11.0% year-on-year (YoY)
in the second quarter of 2012 to 720,117 units, according to International Data
Corporation (IDC) Taiwan branch.
Preliminary results of the global provider of market intelligence and advisory services show the overall PC makers` revenue in the period being US$444.7 million, down 0.6% QoQ and down 10.2% YoY.
A senior analyst at IDC Taiwan says the overall market brims with caution due to delayed demonstration of Intel`s new Ivy Bridge processors and also delayed (to October) debut of Microsoft`s Windows 8 operating system (OS), though supply shortage of hard-disc drives has been eased in the first quarter (floods in Thailand in the fourth quarter of 2011 disrupted global supplies to impact major PC vendors` shipments). In addition, government tenders also delayed announcing winners in May. Taiwan’s business PC market declined 16.8% YoY during the period, compared to 8.3% YoY decline in the home market.
Some 277,201 notebook PCs were sold in Taiwan in the second quarter of 2012, IDC Taiwan said, up 2.8% QoQ but down 15.4% YoY, for revenue of US$220.8 million, a 4.1% QoQ increase and 16.4% YoY decline. Shipments of desktop PCs were 442.916 units, down 14.7% QoQ and 8.1% YoY, translating into revenue of US$223.9 million, down 4.9% QoQ and a 2.3% YoY decrease.
IDC Taiwan forecasts that Taiwan`s desktop PC shipments will see only a 7.8% half-on-half (HoH) growth in the second half of 2012; while sales of notebook PCs are expected to grow about 44.1% HoH in the second half, thanks to vendors` new products and increasing number of Ultrabook models to be announced. The overall PC shipments in the second half, the company said, are expected to fall about 2.0% YoY.
