While we’ve recently seen the introduction of 19 nm NAND
memory, manufacturers are already preparing for 16 nm
NAND. The NAND flash memory is used in e.g. SSDs and smaller memory means more
chips per wafer thus lower production costs. Smaller chips also introduce new
challenges, as the density increases the chips are more error prone. Improved
error correction methods are required to make the data on the chips reliably
available.
While it’s expected that the first chips will be
available in 2013, due to the challenges ahead, mass production of the chips
will be later than expected. But according to Digitimes this will
help chip prices to become more stable allowing downstream module companies to
focus on developing new products and
applications
