Although Microsoft has already released Windows 8, notebook brand vendors are still promoting Windows 7-based models in the fourth quarter in order to digest remaining inventories. Some players are even offering entry-level models at US$359-399, according to sources from notebook brand vendors.

In Taiwan, some players are offering Core i3-based notebooks at NT$13,000 (US$446) and are pairing them with Windows 8 upgrade offers to attract consumers.

The sources pointed out that Windows 8-based notebooks are unlikely to start seeing demand until the first half of 2013.
