Taiwan-based embedded system makers such as Advantech, ICP Electronics, Arbor Technology, Avalue Technology, and Unitech have been aggressive in developing the medical application market. Industry sources noted that the global medical related embedded system application market is likely to show significant annual growth.
Industry sources stated that the traditional medical market used to be a closed ecosystem where the average IT firms had little access. Even for Advantech, a firm that has been developing the smart medical system market for years, it took it some time before making inroads to the supply chain.
The industry sources added that Taiwan-based hardware platform provider or operating system platform firms have been focusing on peripheral applications for the medical market. As for the main medical equipment market, Taiwan-based firms are mostly at the stage of supplying related components.
To enter the market of producing medical equipment, the firms need to obtain many verifications, said the sources, and hence in the short run, most firms will start by manufacturing products such as calling systems.
Furthermore, Taiwan's medical market is relatively small, and hence firms have to expand to the international market. To do so, the sources pointed out, firms need to find reliable and large-size system integrators that have the ability to enter the medical equipment industry supply chain.
Currently, Advantech has many projects in the Greater China region while Avalue Technology focuses on Europe and US markets. Arbor Technology has been cooperating with Japan-based customers. Unitech has been introducing a series of new products and has completed projects in Singapore and Malaysia.
