Nexus 7, a tablet that was launched last year in the US, became the first Google device to be sold through the company's virtual store in India. Indian consumers can now pre-order the tablet through Google Play store (http://www.play.google.com/store). The device has been priced at Rs 15,999.
Google's Nexus 7 came to Indian stores days after Google chairman Eric Schmidt visited India. He apologized for the non-availability of Nexus products in India. He said "I apologize for the lack of Nexus devices in India. But this is something we are working on. Part of the problem is that our products are more expensive than what they should be here in India. Then there are certification issues. We want a fully-serviced market".
Nexus 7 is powered with NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Along with an internal memory of 16GB and 1GB RAM, it comes with the latest version of Android Jelly bean (4.1). The 7-inch tablet is enabled with WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC (android beam). Nexus 7 has to compete with Apple's iPad 2, a well-established product in the Indian market. Though the iPad has cooler Apps and human Interface than the Nexus 7, its price is also seven to eight thousand more.
This is the first nexus product Google has officially started selling in India. The android phone Nexus S was in the Indian markets last year, but it was sold entirely by Samsung. Google has been relatively slow in bringing its devices and services to India compared to Apple but, Google fans in India can rejoice for the fact that the sale has at last began and we can hope to see many more Android products in the market directly by Google.
