Lite-On Technology expects orders for camera modules used in handsets to significantly increase from March-April 2013 and demand from China-based smartphone vendors to be the main source of growth, according to the company.
Lite-On Technology began shipments of over 10-megapixel camera modules, including 12- to 13-megapixel high-end models, in the fourth quarter of 2012 and plans to expand its monthly production capacity from 20 million modules currently by 20-30% in 2013, the company indicated. In addition to Taiwan- and South Korea-based smartphone vendors, Lite-On Technology has been a camera module supplier for the five largest China-based smartphone vendors, the company said.
While February consolidated revenues decreased on year by 12%, revenues from camera modules increased by nearly 40% due to growing global demand for smartphones and tablets, Lite-On Technology said.
In addition to camera modules, shipments of LED devices used in LED lighting are on the rise, Lite-On Technology noted. Its subsidiary Leotek Electronics won open-bids for LED street lamps from local governments in Taiwan at the end of 2012, and Lite-On Technology started shipments of LED devices to Leotek in the first quarter of 2013. Lite-On Technology said it expects orders for LED devices used in indoor LED lighting from the US and Europe to increase in 2013.
Due to growing demand for cloud computing and mobile terminal devices, Lite-On Technology expects orders for its power supplies used in servers and mobile communication infrastructure to increase by over 10% in 2013.
