Mobile device OS (operating system) operators including Tizen, Firefox OS, Ubuntu Touch and Sailfish OS all showcased their platforms and terminal products at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 eyeing the growing mobile device OS market, according to industry sources.
The Tizen OS, co-developed by the Linux Foundation, Intel and Samsung Electronics, has a high potential to compete for the third title in the mobile device OS segment, the sources noted.
Tizen-based smartphones are likely to hit the market in the third quarter of 2013, with Japan-based NTT DoCoMo being the first vendor to launch Tizen phones, followed by Orange in Europe, said the sources.
Huawei has joined Tizen's steering committee and is expected to roll out Tizen-based phones in the second half of 2013, noted the sources, adding that Korea-based KT Corporation and SKT as well as Vodafone and Sprint Nextel are also interested in launching Tizen phones.
In addition to joining the Tizen camp, Huawei has also entered the development of Firefox OS-based models. Other vendors including TCL (Alcatel), LG Electronics and Sony Mobile Communications are also likely to launch Firefox-based smartphones in mid-2013 targeting markets in Central and South America, and Eastern Europe, revealed the sources.
