Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is already ready to take on a growing challenge from Samsung Electronics in the IC foundry space, company chairman and CEO Morris Chang said during a recent event in Taipei.
Samsung is a formidable competitor for TSMC, indicated Chang, when responding to media speculation about a "Kill Taiwan" plan reportedly embraced internally by Samsung's high-level decision makers.
With its technological leadership, production manufacturing capabilities and intensive customer relationships, TSMC has always been ready and is confident to fight any competitor, Chang added.
According to a report published by the Chinese-language Business Today recently, Samsung's top policy makers have been implementing a strategy designed to undermine Taiwan industry's competitiveness. TSMC is among the target companies they want to knock down.
However, some industry observers have pointed out possible disadvantages faced by Samsung particularly its foundry operation.
The observers believe that the loss of Apple's application processor (AP) orders will have a negative impact on Samsung's foundry business. Apple is expected to contract other foundries to manufacture its APs used in iPhone and iPad devices in 2013, the observers claimed.
In addition, Samsung's lack of technology in the manufacture of graphics processing units (GPUs) will continue to keep it behind TSMC, the industry observers said.
Samsung has already become the largest producer of memory chips and LCD panels, and has strengthened its leadership in the two fields.
